NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School boys basketball team was recognized for their outstanding achievement of earning the 2016-2017 New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, North 1, Section 2 Boys Basketball Sectional State Championship during the Town Council meeting on Monday.
In front of council members, Mayor Diglio, and Deputy Mayor Levante, family and friends, The Newton High School boys basketball team, along with Head Coach Dirk Kelly and assistant coaches, Paul Filan, Joe Bolen, and Ken Teets, were honored for their outstanding performance.
Mayor Diglio read the proclamation as the group of 11 boys and four coaches stood in front of their peers. Praising the entire varsity basketball team the proclamation said, in part:
“The hard work and team effort exhibited by all the members of the Newton High School Boys Varsity Basketball Team, resulted in them earning the 2016-2017 New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, North 1, Section 2 Boys Basketball Sectional State Championship.”
“…The team with its 11 members takes pride in their 2-16-2017 season with a record of 20 wins and seven losses, securing the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference Freedom Division Boys Basketball Championship…”
“The team’s captains, Jason Heter and Charlie Maker [who accepted the award on behalf of the team], who were named to the First Team All-area by Mugs Media, led their team to the State Championship, a first on the program’s history and for a public school in Sussex County”
“…Each of the team members and coaches should take pride in the part they played individually to create a winning overall team…”
Mayor Diglio and the council members gave their congratulations to the Newton boys varsity basketball team and their coaches for their outstanding season and wished them continued success in their future seasons.
