NEWTON, NJ—The stakes were high and the teams evenly matched as the eight-seeded Newton faced off against ninth-seeded North Warren in the first round of the 2017 NJSIAA North, Group 1 tournament on Wednesday.
The Newton High School’s lacrosse team took the win by one, with a score of 17-16, after going into overtime.
Going into halftime, the Braves were behind by one, however they came out strong, scoring seven in the third quarter against North Warren’s two and one additional goal in the fourth to North Warren’s five to tie the score at 16.
Leading the Braves in their close victory was Kyle Vandenberg, who contributed five goals. Following behind him were PJ Russell and Ryan Vanderburg with three goals apiece. Andrew Chrustic, Grant Parker, and Giovanni Bevacqua each had two goals.
Leading offensively for Newton was Nicholas Daschko and Chrustic, who beat North Warren to eight ground balls, while Nick Krawchuk was close behind them with seven.
Russell and Parker each scooped up six ground balls, while Tim Houliohan and Vandenberg each got to five. Vanderburg got to four ground balls, while Matt Krawchuk, Hunter Grave de Peralta and Chris Polyak each got three.
Polyak took over for regular starter goalie Tyler Sevean throughout the game against North Warren. Sevean grabbed two saves and Polyak got 11 saves.
The Newton High School lacrosse team moves to the quarterfinal round of the tournament where they will take on top-seeded Mountain Lakes, away on Saturday, May 20 beginning at 11 a.m.
