NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School boys soccer took the second round of the tri-county tournament on Saturday, beating 12-seed Voorhees 2-1. Newton, ranked fifth, was ranked fifth when hosted the Vikings.
Kevin Ayoso and Luca Morello each found the net for the Braves, assisted by John Ananoria and Michael Cleary.
Newton keeper, Noah Metzgar, had three saves against the Voorhees. The Braves outshot the Vikings 6-3.
Moving to the third round, Newton will travel to play number four seed Delaware Valley on Saturday, October 13 beginning at 11 a.m.
The boys shut out High Point 5-0, when they hosted them on Friday.
With three goals, Owen Power, led the Braves in scoring. Kevin Ayoso and Joey Spadafora, each added one goal apiece.
The win was a team effort with five Braves credited with assists; John Ananoria, Christian Calderaro, Michael Cleary, Josh Faller, and Spadafora.
Newton had two keepers against High Point. Starter Noah Metzgar and Jackson Heller each had one save. Newton had 18 shots on goal.
The Braves move their overall record to 9-1 and their conference-division record to 6-1, where they remain in first place over Hackettstown.
Newton will host Mount Olive on their turf field, in a regular season game on Monday, October 8, beginning at 4 p.m.
