NEWTON, NJ—The Newton Boys Soccer team tied Sparta, 1-1, last week, when they played away at Sparta’s field.

Edward Lynch scored for Newton, with an assist by Richie Reczka.

“I thought that we played well against Sparta specifically in the first half. It was an important game as it was crucial for both teams in order for seeding purposes for the Hunterdon Sussex Warren Tournament,” said Coach Brian Martin.

Tanner Euston, goalkeeper for Newton, had seven saves against Sparta. Sparta’s goalkeeper, Scott Altieri stopped 10.

“It was a tough stretch for us, as we played three overtime games in only a four-day period.  I think those three overtime games were important in developing grit and mental toughness. Our senior leaders did a great job keep the team focused”, said Martin.

Newton’s record is now 5-0-2, with the ties against Vernon and Sparta.
