NEWTON, NJ—Despite the weather, the Newton boys soccer team won their first game of the season against Jefferson last week, 3-0.

Goals were scored by Kevin Sosa, Nick Dashko, and Cameron Saks. Assists were made by Patrick Bresney, Roman Ivaldi, and Alejandro Patino.

Although the rain made it more difficult to control the ball on the turf field at the high school, the boys did not let the weather stop them from playing tough against Jefferson.

For the majority of the game, Newton was able to keep the ball on Jefferson’s side of the field. This year the team plans to “place a great deal of emphasis on strong team defense,” said Head Coach, Brian Martin. Martin has been head coach of the team for the past three years.

Newton goalie Tanner Euston, saved the shots that were taken on him by Jefferson players during the corner kicks. “We are a team that experienced many growing pains last year. We are a much more experienced team and we are looking to prove ourselves,” said Martin.
