NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School Lady Braves Field Hockey team defeated Sparta 4-0 in the second round of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex tournament on Friday.

Newton began the tournament as the fifth-seeded team with a bye in the first round. Twelfth ranked Sparta took on 17-seeded team Pope John in the first round, winning 1-0 to move to the second round.

Lauren Barbato, Victoria Docherty, Angela Melillo, and Sidney Pavlishin each put one in the net for the Braves. Barbato led with two assists. Sammie DeIorio, and Dominique Simeone, who each had one.

Starting keeper for the Lady Braves was Abby Berkowitz who had four saves against Sparta’s four shots. Newton had 14 shots on Sparta’s goal.

Newton moves onto the quarterfinals and will play the winner of the second round game of fourth-seeded Hackettstown and 16-seeded Phillipsburg on Saturday, October 6.
