NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School field hockey team blanked Kittatinny 5-0 when they played them away on Monday, September 18.

The Braves out shot the Cougars 14-5, and managed to score all five of their goals in the second half of the game.

“After a slow start and a little difficulty transitioning to the grass field, we made some adjustments at half time and discussed what needed to change,” Head Coach, Lisa Bechtel said. “The girls came out on fire, their level of motivation and enthusiasm to win was off the chart and it was pure desire to score and a total team effort that led to them collecting five goals.”

Morgan Mendel led the Lady Braves in scoring, contributing three goals, along with Elissar Abou-Jaoude and Jade Luciani who each added one.

Lauren Barbato led assists with three, followed by Mendel with one and Dominique Simeone with one assist as well.

Abby Berkowitz, starting goalie for Newton had five saves against Kittatinny’s five shots throughout the game.

“The team is beginning to develop a synergy and comfort level with each other. They are relatively new at working with one another, but are doing a fantastic job jelling together. Our mid fielders are becoming stronger with each game and are doing an excellent job connecting our offensive and defense. The group is a wonderful collection of young ladies and they are an absolute pleasure to coach,” Bechtel said.

The Lady Braves took on Wallkill Valley on Wednesday, with a 4-3 record overall and a 2-1 conference record.
