NEWTON, NJ – The Newton High School field hockey girls got a threepeat on Friday, winning the North Jersey Section 1, Group 2 title over Mountain Lakes 2-1.
With all three goals coming in the first half, it was an intense game to the last whistle. Newton broke out first with a goal by Newton Sophomore Victoria Docherty from a battle in front of Mountain Lakes net. Docherty was assisted by Nicole Rizzo.
It was only a matter of minutes before Mountain Lakes tied it up.
Newton’s Natalie Rivas broke the tie with less than 20 seconds left in the first half on a pass from Lauren Barbato.
Newton’s tough defense held Mountain Lakes scoreless in the second half, despite several opportunities.
Abby Berkowitz was in goal for Newton stopping four Mountain Lakes shots. Two Mountain Lakes goalies split time in net. Jessica Menack grabbed 4 and Aline Miller stopped six.
Newton’s record is 17-2 as they prepare to face off against Madison in the Group 1 Semifinal game on Wednesday. While it is the third time they have taken the division title, the Braves have not been able to get past this next rung on the ladder to a state championship game.
The location and time of the semifinal has not yet been announced.
