NEWTON, NJ—Despite their season being shortened and the opportunity to go to Metlife Stadium taken away, the Newton Braves Football team came out of the 2020 season on top; undefeated division champions. Newton hosted Mountain Lakes under the lights on the turf field on Friday, November 20 winning 42-7.

“Usually you go into this game and you know you have states," senior Aaron Fantasia said, “But we knew going into this game, it was going to be our last. We knew it and we put it all on the line. There is no doubt that we’re the best team around here.”

Teammate and fellow senior Dylan Bailey echoed his sentiments, “We went out there and we dominated. No doubt that we’re the best team.”

The Braves made seven trips to their end zone against Mountain Lakes; four in the first half and the last two in the second half. Robert McCullough went six for six on the extra-point kicks.

Peyton Nolan had 25 carries for 212-yards, with a 35-yard run in the first quarter to put Newton on the board. Nolan would score three more times throughout the game.

Fantasia, who scored the second touchdown on a 74-yard pass from quarterback Jack Young, had seven carries for 42-yards. Young had 11 carries for 85-yards.

Nolan and Fantasi teamed up as they had all season, dominated both offensively and defensively. To finish up the second quarter, Nolan scored another touchdown off a 22-yard run, and Fantasia scored off a 51-yard pass from Young.

Nolan scored back-to-back touchdowns, one in the third on a 32-yard run and again in the fourth, for the final Newton touchdown with an 18 yard carry.

Young connected on all eight of his attempts for a total of 235-yards passed and two touchdowns.

Defensively the Braves kept the Lakers on their heels. Shane Nannery, Heath Letsz, Thaylor Sibblies and Brody Guerra each had two sacks. Senior Dylan Bailey had one sack and six tackles. Melkart Abou-Jobde, had one sack and five tackles. Young had five tackles, Peyton Nolan had 10 tackles, Braydon Nolan had eight, Young had five tackles, Fantasia and Ryan Pappas each had four tackles,.

Fantasia, Pappas, and Letsz each grabbed a Lakers interception.

The Newton High School Football team ends their season as the four time Division Champion and with an undefeated record of 6-0.
