NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School Girls Basketball team crushed Wallkill Valley 74-30 in the preliminary round of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex tournament on Saturday.

Leading the Braves in their victory over Wallkill Valley was Madison Leonardo, who contributed 17 points to the Braves’ score. Leonardo made five 3-pointers and two foul shots.

Following closely to Leonardo were Kaitlyn Lynch and Jade Luciani. Lynch contributed 12 points, making five 2-pointers and two foul shots. Luciani had 10 points, with five 2-pointers.

Courtney McHale and Olivia O’Brein each contributed seven points to the score, while Emily Pappas, Jasmine Luciani and Arianna Ziegler each contributed six points.  Irelee Ferguson got three points for the Braves.

Offensively, the Braves made 20 2-pointers, eight 3-pointers, and 10 foul shots. They also had a total of 27 assists. Defensively, the team got 37 rebounds, two blocks, and 10 steals throughout the game.

The Newton High School Girls Basketball team, who starts the tournament in the sixth seed spot advances to the first round. They will host 11-seeded Lenape Valley on Saturday, February 4. The time is still TBD.
