NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School girls basketball team left Phillipsburg Friday with a heartbreaking loss to High Point 44-33, in the final round of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex tournament.
Despite six players putting up points the Braves lost by 11 points to High Point. Kaitlyn Lynch had 10 points, Jasmine Luciani nine, Jade Luciani six, Irelee Ferguson five, Madison Leonardo two, and Courtney McHale added one point
The Braves took the first quarter leading 9-5, but the score rose to 22-20, by the halftime buzzer with High Point leading.
As they came into second half, Newton tried to hold on, scoring seven points in the third quarter and six in the fourth.
However, High Point continued their hold on the lead adding 12 points in the third quarter and 10 more in the final quarter.
The Newton High School Girls Basketball team heads to States with a 16-9 record overall and a 3-0 conference division record.
They will take on eighth-seeded New Milford as the ninth-seeded team in the tournament on Monday, February 27 beginning at 6 p.m. in New Milford
