NEWTON, NJ—The sixth-seeded Newton High School girls soccer shut down 19-seeded Hopatcong 5-0 when they played them home on Saturday, October 1 in the first round of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex tournament.
Courtney McHale led the Braves in scoring, contributing two goals for the Braves. Kayleigh Furth, Maddie Mitchel, and Kass Wojcik each contributed one goal.
Furth led the team in assists, contributing two, while Kendra Berry, Brianna Giordano, and McHale each had one assist.
Newton had two goalkeepers in during the game against Hopatcong. Karis Steele started the game and had one save. McHale ended the game in the goal for the Braves and had five saves.
The Braves took 23 shots on Hopatcong’s goalie. Hopatcong however, only took two shots on Newton’s goal.
Sixth-seeded Newton will go forward into the next round of the H/W/S tournament and play against 11-seeded Belvidere on Saturday, October 8.
