NEWTON, NJ—The ninth-seeded Newton girls soccer team took on 20-seed Sussex Tech on Monday, October 2 and shut them out 6-0 to advance past the first round of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex tournament.
“We were able to keep possession of the ball to prevent Sussex Tech from attacking,” said Head Coach Jake Mull.
Kayleigh Furth once again leading the Braves in another victory this season, scored two goals. Dand Catallano, Brianna Giordano, Jocelyn Mull, and Kass Wojcik each contributed one goal apiece. Assists were made by Emily Brothman, Furth, Nina Matullo, Regan Thiel, Blaise Vallorosi, and Wojcik.
Newton completely out shot teh Mustangs with 23 shots to their two shots on goal. Riley Scuralli took on the position of goalkeeper for Newton this game and had two saves to Sussex Tech’s goalies’ 17 saves.
“We play Belvidere on Saturday,” said Mull “and hope to continue playing well as we have done the last three games”.
The Newton Girls soccer team will take on eight-seeded Belvidere in the second round of the H/W/S tournament, away on Saturday, beginning at 4 p.m.
