NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School Girls Softball Team earned their first win of the season on Wednesday, April 5, beating Hackettstown on the road, 6-2.
Six Braves scored runs for their team, including Carly DeIorio, Sierra Dunn, Hannah Roessler, Riley Scuralli, Kathryn Szatkiewicz, and Abby Wittig.
Taylor Thieme led the Newton Braves in hits, contributing on two out of her four at-bats, one of which was a double and a run-batted-in.
DeIorio, Scuralli, Szatkiewicz, and Petrina Herold, had one hit a piece. Scuralli got one hit during her four at-bats, which was a triple and an RBI.
Roessler and Wittig each got one walk, while Morgan Mendel, who had three at bats with no hits, pinch-hit for a player and got a double. Dunn got the Braves’ only stolen base throughout the game.
Pitcher, Katie Maker, pitched the full seven inning game against Hackettstown. She got 12 strike-outs and six walks, while only allowing four hits, two runs, and one error.
Newton’s record is now 1-1 as they move ahead in the season to host Wallkill Valley on Friday, April 7 at Memory Park’s Upper field beginning at 4 p.m.
