NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School students who make up the two sections of the Jazz Band, celebrated their final concert of the 2016-2017 school year on Tuesday, June 6.

Under the direction of Steven O’Toole, the Jazz Band was split into two sections, Band A and Band B. This was due to the fact that “there was so much interest in being a member, that this year, there was need for two sections”, explained O’Toole.

Each band played their own set. Band B’s set included:

  • Blue Monk, composed by T. Monk and arranged by M. Sweeney
  • Cappuccino, composed by S. Nestico
  • Second Line, arranged by V. Goines
  • A Night in Tunishia, composed by D. Gillespie and arranged by R. Ford
  • Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, composed by J Zawinul and arranged by P. Jennings

While Band A’s set included the following songs:

  • Tenor Madness, composed by S. Rollins and arranged by D. Mills
  • Fables of Faubus, composed by C. Mingus and arranged by S. Slagle
  • Kicks N’ Licks, composed by H. Rowe
  • Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, composed by C. Mingus and arranged by A Homzy
  • Haitian Fight Song, composed by C. Mingus and S. Johnson
  • At the Oasis, composed by A. Farber
  • Bandar’s Five-Year Funk, composed by N. Yorke-Slader

Each song featured multiple solos from the performers, from the trumpets to the saxophones, a few drum solos and guitar solos, and even a few from the only bass trombone played by Sam Brothman.

The bass trombone played by Brothman was purchased with the assistance of a grant from the Newton Pride Foundation. The Ewing family supplemented the grant making the purchase possible.  

One of the songs that Band A performed, Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, was their competition piece this year. It won multiple awards for Saxophone solos by Krieg, along with awards for the trombones for best parts throughout the song.

Four senior members of the band were recognized by O’Toole before the final song was played: Connor Krieg, Caleb MacGray, Connor McKnight, and Joe Newman. Each of the four members spent four years in the jazz band under O’Toole’s direction.

The entire jazz band along with O’Toole, thanked the Newton Hig School administration, along with the entire Board of Education

O’Toole thanked the parents of all the members of the jazz band, “I wanted to thank all the parents who got up at the crack of dawn every morning, multiple times during the week, to drop your kids off at the high school and leave them with me.”

Update: Police Break Up Fight Involving 40-50 People at Bridgewater Commons Mall

BRIDGEWATER, NJ — No injuries have been reported in an incident that shut down Bridgewater Commons Mall Thursday evening after a fight involving a crowd of 40-50 people.
