NEWTON, NJ - Two members of the Newton Lenape Valley ice hockey team were honored for their contributions to the team at the Morris County Secondary School Ice Hockey League last week. The players and their families attended the awards dinner at the Hanover Manor in East Hanover.
Tyler Sevean and Joseph Castelluccio attended the awards dinner representing their schools' team playing in the Haas Division.
Sevean was named to the second team as a forward. Castelluccio received Honorable Mention. Only six players were chosen for each level: a goalie, two defensemen and three forwards.
In his three years as a varsity player Sevean had accumulated 52 points, 28 goals and 24 assists.
“The season was great, we faced some bumps along the way but pushed through and won the Haas Cup, first in school and county history,” Sevean said. “And the banquet was a lot of fun, got to see some faces I knew from travel hockey. I was honored to have been picked for the second all-star team. It truly was a great experience and I hope my play next year can get me there again.”
Playing three years on varsity Castelluccio had 17 points, eight goals and nine assists. He plans to attend Coastal Carolina as a business major. Castelluccio plans to play hockey as well as join the saltwater fishing club.
"It was really hard to leave my boys at the end of the season. We had our ups and are downs for sure but we always got through it as a family,” Castelluccio. “Winning the Haas Cup was on our mind from November 5 and never took it out of sight. We had goal in mind and they look at us now we are the first Sussex county team to do it. The award dinner was really nice. Seeing all my friends getting recognized for their hard work in the season.”
The Newton Lenape Valley team won the Haas Cup this season with a record of 14-8-4. They finished second in their division.
