NEWTON, NJ - Newton Police Department responded to a report of an unresponsive male in a Spring Street apartment building.  Upon arrival, officers observed a male, 39, to be unconscious in one of the buildings’ hallways.  He was displaying signs and symptoms consistent with a heroin overdose.

On Tuesday, Sept 22 at 5:30 p.m. Ptl, Shawn Burke administered Narcan to the man, which caused to him regaining consciousness. He was transported to the Newton Medical Center by the Newton First Aid Squad.

Investigating Officers were Ptl. Shawn Burke and Ptl. Scott Vertetis.

CVS Pharmacy announced on Wednesday it will make the overdose reversal drug naloxone available without a prescription in 14 states including New Jersey.  They began the initiative in Aug of 2014 in Rhode Island and then Massachusetts.  The other states include:

  • Arkansas,
  • California,
  • Minnesota,
  • Mississippi,
  • Montana,
  • North Dakota,
  • Pennsylvania,
  • South Carolina,
  • Tennessee,
  • Utah and
  • Wisconsin.
