NEWTON, NJ—Along with the beautiful sunshine, residents got up and met at Town Hall’s municipal building on Saturday, April 29 at 8:30 a.m. to help with Newton’s annual Neighbors Helping Neighbors event.

Groups such as Girl Scout Troops, Cub Scouts Pack 85, Sussex Technical School’s Football Team-the Stags, and members of the Newton Fire Department, along with members of the Board of Education; Anthony Neggers II and Jessica Eigner, Town Mayor Sandra Diglio, Deputy Mayor Wayne Levante, Town Manager Thomas Russo, Planning Board member, Alex Majewski, and Candidate for Assembly David Atwood, and more came out for the event.

Debbie Danielson, Recreation Supervisor for Newton both coordinated and ran the event on Saturday.

“It is great that we get so many kids, families, and town groups to come out for the event every year,” Danielson said.

This year, the event happened to coincide with Opening Day at Memory Park’s baseball and softball season, so the Girl Scout troop had to wait until 10 a.m. to head down there to help out.

The Stags were the largest group with about 25 members volunteering and were split up into four groups. They went to the four residences that had asked for help with yard work such as raking leaves, cleaning out flower beds, and even painting a scooter ramp for a resident.

Other jobs included picking up trash in the parking lots around Town Hall, which Neggers, Levante and family, Diglio, and other employees of the town that volunteered took on and Memory Park, which the Cub Scout Pack 85 with their leader Eigner took on.

The four members of the Newton Fire Department put flowers around the two “Welcome to Newton” signs, one by the Sussex County Community College and the other on the Andover/Newton line by the St. Paul’s Abbey.

Majewski, along with Atwood and his two kids took on the job of cleaning up the parking lot and park area at Pine Street Park.

While the day was productive and a little busy, Danielson made sure she provided breakfast as well as lunch for the volunteers, along with neon colored shirts for the first 100 volunteers.
