The Newton Rotary Club  www.newtonrotary.org will hold its 47th Annual Golf Outing to benefit the Newton Medical Center Foundation. The  event will be held at the Newton Country Club on September 10, 2014. This year the event will honor John Frank. John grew up in Allentown, Pa and arrived in Newton, NJ in 1961 to teach  English at Newton High School. He assumed the principalship in 1975 and retired in 1996.  John is also a long time club member and served as  Secretary for 27 years until June of this year.

Other recent recipients include Dr Tom Digby and Dr & Mrs Lou Fletcher.

The club has partnered with the hospital since it was built about 80 years ago and was instrumental in the formation. Many former members participated and made major early contributions. These early efforts included donation of the land that the facility sits on.

Previous major donations include $50,000 toward the nurses’ lounge and $100,000 for the emergency room.

Currently, Newton Rotary is in the midst of fulfilling a $100,000 commitment. This 5 year pledge was initiated in 2013.  Last year $17,911 was raised and counted toward the pledge. Presentation was made at a ceremony in June. This year efforts are being made to increase that total.

Newton Rotary is a local service club that is part of the International Rotary Organization. While many of the club’s efforts are devoted to the local community other efforts and donations go into international causes. The most prominent of these is the worldwide effort to eliminate polio.   http://www.endpolio.org/#supporters . The disease has now almost been totally eliminated throughout the world.

Newton Rotary has been in the community since 1923 and holds weekly luncheons and programs on Wednesdays. Meetings are held at The Lafayette House at 12:15. Current membership is over 100 and includes a wide cross section of men and women.
