NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School softball team swept past Sussex Tech 13-1, in the first round of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament on Tuesday, when they played them home.
Petrina Herold led seven-seeded Newton in their victory over 18-seeded Sussex Teach, by driving in three RBIs, going 4-for-4 at bat, getting a double and scoring one run herself.
Also contributing to the score was Riley Scuralli, who went 3-for-3, driving in two RBIs with a triple and three runs scored, along with Brielle Bello, who went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a double.
Sierra Dunn, Hannah Roessler, and Kathryn Szatkiewicz each added an RBI. Dunn went 3-for-3, scoring three runs, Roessler scored one run, and Szatkiewicz went 1-for-3.
Morgan Mendel led the Braves with one stolen base. She went 2-for-2, scoring two runs for the team, while Taylor Thieme, Abby Wittig, and Carly De Iorio each contributed one run apiece.
Katie Maker pitched the five inning game against Sussex Tech. She struck out nine, walked three, and allowed only one hit throughout the entire game.
The Newton High School Girls Softball team is 5-2 overall this season and 1-2 in the league. They move onto the next round of the H/W/S tournament, their opponent, date, time, and location of their next game has yet to be determined.
