NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School softball team lost to Vernon 6-2, when they played them away on Saturday in the quarterfinal round of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex tournament.
Seven-seeded Newton’s attempts to comeback fell short with only two runs, leaving second-seeded Vernon to claim the victory.
Taylor Thieme and Abby Wittig each drove in one RBI for Newton. Wittig and Brielle Bello each went 2-for-3 at the plate, with Bello putting one on the board.
Carly De Iorio, Hannah Roessler, Riley Scuralli, and Thieme each went 1-for-4 at bat. Morgan Mendel went 2-for-4 at bat, while Kathryn Szatkiewicz scored one run for Newton.
Katie Maker, who pitched the full six inning game for Newton, struck out eight and walked four. She allowed six runs on seven hits, with three errors.
Newton’s record advances to 7-3 overall and 1-2 in their league division. They will continue the regular season as they take on North Warren, away, on Tuesday May 2, beginning at 4 p.m.
