NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School softball team swept past Wallkill Valley on Monday, shutting them out 16-0 in the second round of the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex tournament, when they played them home.
The Braves started off strong, scoring three runs in the first, one in the second, eight in the third, and finished out strong too with four in the fourth inning against Wallkill.
It was a team effort on the field and behind the mound for the Braves. Carly De Iorio, Petrina Herold, Hannah Roessler, Riley Scuralli, and Taylor Thieme, each drove in two RBIs apiece. Sierra Dunn and Kathryn Szatkiewicz each drove in one RBI.
Herold went 4-for-4 against Wallkill, scoring three runs and leading Newton with two doubles. Thieme went 3-for-3, scoring three runs and getting the only stolen base for the Braves.
De Iorio went 2-for-3, scoring two runs, Dunn went 2-for-4, scoring one, Morgan Mendel went 1-for-2, scoring one run with a double, Roessler went 1-for-1, scoring a run with a double.
Scuralli went 2-for-3, scoring two runs, while Szatkiewicz went 3-for-4, scoring one run and grabbing a double.
Katie Maker, pitched the full game, which was only five innings due to the 10 run rule played in softball and baseball. Maker struck out 11 players, walked two and allowed three hits.
The seven-seeded Newton High School Girls Softball team advances to the quarterfinals of the tournament, where they will play against second-seeded Vernon, away on Saturday, April 29.
