Newton Softball: Tough Season as Girls Take Another Loss

NEWTON, NJ—The Newton Girls Softball team lost to Hackettstown 17-9, when they played them home at Memory Park on Friday, April 8.

Taylor Thieme started on the mound for the Braves, pitching five innings. She got two strike-outs and one walk, as well as had 12 runs, eight hits, one home-run and six errors.

Katie Maker closed for the Braves, pitching two innings. She got one strike-out and had three walks, giving up five runs and three hits.

Katherine Szatkiewicz was the top scorer for the Braves, contributing three runs. At her four at bats, Szatkiewicz got two hits, one single and one double.

Angelya Larsen, Riley Scuralli, Sierra Dunn, Carly Delorio, Morgan Mendel and Becca Finley each scored one run for the Braves.

Thieme had the most RBIs for the Braves with three, while Dunn and Brielle Brown each had two RBIs, and Scuralli and Delorio each got one.

Overall the girls’ record is 0-3 and their league record is 0-1. They will take on the Vernon Vikings away on Monday, April 11 at 4 p.m.

Researchers in Denmark studied the health records of more than 300,000 people born between 1930 and 1989 and found that those who were shorter than average height between ages 7 and 13 had a greater risk of stroke as adults.
