Newton Wrestling Team Demolishes Hawthorne, Loses to Jefferson in Semi-Final Round

NEWTON, NJ—The second-seeded Newton High School wrestling team demolished seventh-seeded Hawthorne 69-3 in round one of the 2018 NJSIAA tournament last Monday.

“We have been wrestling very well lately and that carried over into the Hawthorne state match”, head coach Eric Bollette said. “We have to continue to improve in all phases of competition (feet, top, bottom) as we profess through the state tournament.”

106 lbs.: Nathan Fitt (N) won over Liam McAllister (H) with a pin in 0.45

113 lbs.: Adam Deitrich (H) won over Danny Cleary (N) with a 7-3 decision

120 lbs.:  JoJo Lotruglio (N) won over Jay Castellano (H) with a pin in 0:52

126 lbs.: Matthew Rosa (N) won over Jayden Paladino (H) with a pin in 1:12

132 lbs.: Michael Freda (N) won over Josh Tznaga (H) with a pin in 1:11

138 lbs.: Tim Houlihan (N) won over Joe Aliano (H) with a 12-11 decision

145 lbs.: Trevor Aughenbaugh (N) won over Victorio Riccardi (H) with a pin at 0:18

152 lbs.: Wyatt McCarthy (N) won 16-1 over Declan Smith (H) with a technical fall at 5:22

160 lbs.: Jonathon Borgognoni (N) won over Pat Olah (H) with a pin in 1:00

170 lbs.: Nick Brigante (N) won over Matt Shea (H) with a pin in 0:24

182 lbs.: Joseph DeLuca (N) won Tyler Nelson (H) with a pin in 1:15

195 lbs.: Luke Fischer (N) won over Kris Coya (H) with an 11-2 decision

220 lbs.: Devin Mager (N) won over Christian Balbuena (H) with a pin in 0:50

285 lbs.: Jimmy Harding (N) won over Dan Whalen (H) with a 7-4 decision

“We will be counting on all of our starters who have improved throughout the season and are excited about the opportunity to wrestle in the sectional semifinals vs. Jefferson”, Bollette said.

Newton, as the second-seeded team, hosted third-seeded Jefferson in the semi-final round on Thursday and lost by two.

113 lbs.: Austin Jack (J) won over Danny Cleary (N) with a 6-3 decision

120 lbs.:  JoJo Lotruglio (N) won over Blake Barthaolomew (J) with a pin in 3:04

126 lbs.: Matthew Rosa (N) won over Lawrence DiBiase (J) with a 4-1 decision

132 lbs.: Michael Freda (N) won over Ryan Tripodi (J) with a 6-4 decision

138 lbs.: Mason Godfrey (J) won over Tim Houlihan (N) with a pin in 1:57

145 lbs.: Mike Jack (J) won over Trevor Aughenbaugh (N) with a pin in 3:46

152 lbs.: Wyatt McCarthy (N) won 21-7 in a major decision over Michael Gould (J)

160 lbs.: Robert Rerucci (J) won over Jonathon Borgognoni (N) in a 4-3 decision

170 lbs.: Rob Ortense (J) won over Nick Brigante (N) with a 5-4 decision

182 lbs.: Shane Connolly (J) won with a Newton forfeit

195 lbs. Joseph DeLuca (N) won Justin Randzio (J) with a 3-0 decision

285 lbs.: Jake Carnevale (J) won over Jimmy Harding (N) with a 9-3 decision

The Newton High School wrestling team was able to move its record overall to 17-7 and their conference-division record to 3-1 as they end the season.
