NEWTON, NJ—The students and staff at Merriam Avenue School ended the school year with fun, color, and style.

On Friday, June 2, over 500 students from kindergarten up to fourth grade participated in the annual Field Day event held at the school.

“Field Day was organized by Mr. Down and Mrs. Waldron and me”, said one of Merriam’s gym teachers, Scott Zymet, “We were assisted by about 20 other teachers as well as nine Newton High School students, who were located at different stations.”

There were two separate locations for the students where fun events took place. One was set up for the kindergarten through first grader students, while the other section was set-up for second through fourth grade children.

The school's second event for students, staff and families was the first ever Color Run, held on Sunday, June 4.

This event was the idea of Merriam Avenue School's Guidance counselor Deirdre Iuliani, along with PTO member Grace Raimo.

More than 120 people participated, including students and their families, some board of education members, as well as teachers and staff.

There were 20 volunteers that helped at the event by throwing color powder on the runners as well as some who shot colored water out of buckets onto runners. The event raised a total of $805, all to benefits the PTO.

The course was mapped out by traffic cones so the children had to “connect the dots” so to speak to go through the one mile long course around Merriam Avenue School.

“The event was a tremendous success and it was great to see so many families being active and supporting our school,” said Zymet.

Those who participated were allowed to continue running the course until all the water and powder was used up.
