Scouts Honor Outstanding Women at 24th Annual Sussex County Tribute to Women Awards Luncheon

The Boy Scouts of America, Patriots’ Path Council will be honoring local women at the Sussex County Tribute to Women Awards Luncheon.  Judith Bosworth, Jennifer Gardner, Judy Heim & Shelly Heim, Dr. Cynthia Jones, MD, Janice Stevens, and the Lake Mohawk German Christmas Market Founding Members will be recognized on Friday, May 4, 2018 at 11:00 am at The Reserve at Perona Farms in Andover, for serving as exemplary role models for the youth of our area.  These recipients were chosen for their outstanding services as evidenced by the interest and leadership they have demonstrated within the community of Sussex County. They are citizens who live the ideals of the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. The luncheon co-chairs for the event are Tammie Horsfield and Cathy Kut who are past honorees.

This year’s honorees prove to be outstanding role models to our youth in Sussex County. Judith Bosworth is the Past Treasurer of Garden State C.O.P.S., the New Jersey Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors, Inc. The organization’s main goal is to provide resources to assist in the rebuilding of the lives of surviving families and co-workers of law enforcement officers killed in the line-of-duty. C.O.P.S. also provides training to law enforcement agencies on survivor victimization issues and educates the public of the need to support the law enforcement profession and its survivors.

Jennifer Gardner is the Executive Director of the Sussex County YMCA. She has worked for the Y for 10 years, starting as the membership and marketing director and serving as the executive director for the last 6 years.  At the Y, she recently completed an expansion and renovation, adding a gymnasium, children’s play structure and dedicated spin studio.  Jennifer has served as a board member for the Sussex County Chamber of Commerce for the past 4 years and recently took on Chair of the Board for the Chamber.

Judy and her daughter Shelly Heim own and have operated Morning Star Farm, a horse farm located in Fredon Township, for 27 years. Their specialty is the training of children, adults, children with special needs, Home School Children, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts, the art of horseback riding and horse care and safety. They take part in boarding, training and horse sales. They also host public school field trips, senior citizen field trips, Summer Camp, summer programs for the handicapped, and Boy Scout and Girl Scout badge qualification.

Dr. Cynthia Jones began her career as attending surgeon for Jacobi Medical Center and the North Central Bronx Hospital. While there, she developed and ran a multidisciplinary breast surgery service and earned grants to take care of breast cancer patients from The Susan G. Komen Foundation. In Louisiana, she become Chief of Staff and Chair of the Department of Surgery for the Northern Louisiana Medical Center.  She continued her community involvement, giving lectures on healthcare topics, particularly breast and colon cancer awareness. She joined the staff of the Newton Medical Center in 2012 where she recently became the vice chair of the department of Surgery. Continuing her commitment to helping others, she recently joined the board of the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice.

Helena Bould, Judy Beelaert, Karin Meyer, Gudrun Rank, and the late Edda Kramm founded the Lake Mohawk German Christmas Market in 2001.  Its mission was and is to focus on raising funds to give back to local nonprofit organizations. Having continually grown since then, the committee has now donated close to $300,000 back to local organizations that are annually recognized as having the greatest need. Today, there are over 200 volunteers involved in the market. The market is now recognized as the largest Annual Christmas Market in the State of New Jersey, and the only German Christmas Market run specifically to donate all proceeds back into the community.

Janice Stevens has worked for Sparta Township in various capacities for the past 20 years. She is currently the Zoning Coordinator and Code Enforcement Official. She has volunteered as a Sunday School Teacher at First Presbyterian Church for over 7 years and was an Ambassador for the Newton Medical Center “Year of the Woman Campaign.” Janice serves on the Karen Ann Quinlan Fashion Show Committee and played Santa Claus for the Sparta Farmers Market Holiday Event.  She also volunteers yearly for the “Tour De Farm Tour.”

Through the Sussex County Tribute to Women Awards Luncheon, funds will be raised to support the award-winning child abuse prevention programs offered to the community at large by the Boy Scouts of America. The Patriots’ Path Council ranks high among all the Boy Scout councils in the nation in their fight against child abuse.
