NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School Boys Soccer team’s season came to an end on Tuesday night as they were shut out by Dover’s defense 1-0 in the semi-final round of the Group 2 Championships.
“Their stats were pretty amazing defensively," Newton Head Coach Brian Martin said. “They didn't make any mistakes. Normally were an opportunistic team and they didn't make one defensive error, and that's hard to do with high school kids.”
Both teams went into the game with great resumes. Both teams averaged three goals per game and were only giving up about one goal per game.
Dover has lost in the sectional finals for the past two seasons making this an historical year for the Tigers. They will be playing for the state title against 10-seeded Holmdel on Sunday, November 19 at 10 a.m. at Kean University.
Although the Newton Braves’ season comes to an end with a shutout, the boys record of 14-7-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the conference-division is what won them their second straight sectional title.
