SPARTA, N.J. – Residents will start to receive their 2017 homestead benefit filing information in the mail as early as next week. Assemblymen Parker Space and Hal Wirths, who represent Sussex County and parts of Morris and Warren counties, are urging residents to apply for the benefit, which provides property tax relief in the form of credits. 

 “Property taxes are the number one concern of New Jerseyans,” said Space. “We need all the help we can get and we want to encourage everyone to file for the homestead benefit to ensure they see some relief.” 

The Division of Taxation announced that homeowners in Sussex would start receiving the informational mailers on September 14. Morris County residents can expect to receive them on September 17 and Warren County residents should check their mail on September 21.  

“The homestead benefit program is one of the ways residents can get the help they so desperately need to reduce their property tax burden,” said Wirths. “Also, if residents are eligible for relief under more than one program, we want them to access their full benefits. They need to be aware of the deadlines.” 

The deadline for filing a homestead benefit application is Monday, December 2. To qualify for the benefit, homeowners must have been New Jersey residents and meet the following conditions: the home was a principal residence on Oct. 1, 2017; gross income for 2017 does not exceed more than $150,000 for those 65 and older or disabled and $75,000 for those who are younger than 65 and not disabled; 2017 property taxes were paid.   

The benefit amount will be calculated based on 2006 property taxes for each home. Most homeowners will receive their benefits as credits on their property tax bills, but some could receive a check if they live in a retirement community, co-op or sold their home.
