I came upon a piece, which discussed the Space Race in the context of today, and beginning with Kennedy’s quest to put a man in space. Kennedy made his announcement on putting a man in space in 1961. I had met Kennedy, in a non-probable visit to the Teaneck Armory before the Presidential election! It was 1961 when Kennedy announced his hope to put a man on the Moon, which was brazen for the time, as we were behind the Soviet Union or Russia in that quest with only one manned space shot of 15 minutes.
Kennedy did not see the Moon Shot of 50 years ago, but he would have been excited. Before that successful Moon landing; we were indeed behind the Soviet Union! That Moon landing in 1969 brought many of us to our televisions to watch what Jules Verne wrote about - a trip to the moon and back. Today, we have seen more than Orange Drink or Tang come to our forefront, as so many increases in technology occurred, and High School and College Student enrollment then rose exponentially. Space is now tied to the US and our competitors, and our student enrollment is low!
Today, we face adversaries that indeed will use space to wage war on us either by missiles or satellites in space. The present Chinese leader has noted his country’s intent to pass us in space research and space weaponry, and sends large amounts of Chinese Students to study here on space studies, while our student numbers in space studies are low. China is engaged in military studies, including shooting satellites out of orbit and create other technologies to lessen our satellite mastery!
China has now also landed on the Moon, and we need to remain vigilant in our work on space, as it means jobs, security, and in the end a powerful economy! America, the time has again come to be tested!
