SPARTA, NJ -  Sparta High School photography student Carolyn Galgano won a New Jersey State Teen Arts Festival scholarship.  Her portrait of her dog has earned her recognition at the local and then state level and with it a $1,000 scholarship from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.

Galgano's "Wet Dog" photo began as an assignment in Christine O'Brien-Mase's class to take emotive portraits for her AP Studio Art portfolio.

"Her dog Charlie was taking a bath and she wanted to capture him sitting still," Mase said.

Galgano, along with eight other New Jersey art students from around the state were selected from their local teen arts showcases.  They represent the best juniors and seniors in the state in each of the nine categories of fine and performing arts.

Each of the recipients were selected by the specific Adjudication Artist who critiqued the students' creative works at the State Teen Arts Festival according to information provided by the festival organizers.

Galgano was the only recipient from Sussex County and one of only two from north Jersey. She is planning to attend County College of Morris for two years, pursuing a Nursing degree.

The winners were:

  • Photography - Carolyn Galgano, Sparta High School
  • Visual Arts 2D - Sarah Vargas, Bergen County Academies
  • Filmmaking -  Katie Nguyen, Ocean Township High School
  • Theater - Isaiah Petit Compere, Ewing High School

"Carolyn really came out of her shell this year in AP photography, exploring and pushing herself to find new ideas to photograph familiar subjects," Mase said.

Beginning this fall, Galgano is planning to attend County College of Morris for two years, pursuing a Nursing degree.
