SPARTA, NJ – A Ogdensburg resident, driving off road on Sparta Mountain faces charges after police were called to assist with an injury.  On February 4 around 1 a.m. Sparta Police Officer Finley was first sent to the monument parking area off Edison Road to assist a man with a hand laceration.

Finley then learned Jonathan Wottle, 26, was actually on a dirt road portion of Ridge Road.  The paved portion of Ridge Road begins on Glen Road.  It continues back towards Edison Road, eventually changing to an unpaved, closed road.

Finley drove on the dirt road as far as he could trying to find Wottle.  Eventually Finley had to travel on foot as the road became impassable. Finley finally saw Wottle walking toward him.

Wottle had driven his car back on the closed road.  He struck a rock, causing the injury to his hand.  While they were talking, Finley suspected Wottle was intoxicated.

The Sparta Ambulance Squad brought Wottle to Newton Medical Center for treatment. Finley got a sample of his blood while Wottle was at the hospital.

Wottle was charged with DWI, careless driving, driving a vehicle upon closed section of roadway and failure to maintain lane.

Wottle was released to his father and hospital personnel pending a court date.
