The Sparta Police Department will be participating in the 2017 Distracted Driving Crackdown: U Drive, U Text, U Pay. This campaign will be conducted from Saturday April 1 to Friday April 21, 2017. Additional patrols will be on the road to aggressively enforce motor vehicle violations observed related to distracted driving.
In New Jersey, driver inattention remains the most significant cause of fatal and incapacitating crashes. Distracted driving is any activity that diverts a person’s attention away from the primary task of driving. All distractions endanger the driver, passenger and bystander safety. These distractions include:
- Using a cell phone or smartphone
- Eating and drinking
- Talking to passengers
- Reading, including maps
- Using a navigation system
- Watching a video
- Adjusting a radio, CD player, or MP3 player
But, because using a hand held cell phone while driving to make calls or send text messages requires visual, manual and cognitive attention from the driver, they are by far the most alarming distractions.
The Sparta Police Department recommends you put down the phone while driving and try to eliminate all distractions while driving. It could actually save your life and the life of another driver!
