SPARTA, NJ – Sparta police received a call reporting someone who appeared to be intoxicated was leaving Krogh’s Restaurant and attempting to drive. 

On May 28, at approximately 1:30 a.m. Sparta Cpl Craig Crauerholz and Cpl Rich Smith were responding to White Deer Plaza looking for the car and driver that matched the description given by the caller according to police, when the car passed them, according to police.

Grauerholz and Smith watched as the 2011 Lincoln abruptly turned into the Mohawk Avenue School without signaling, as another police car approached, police said.

The officers stopped the Lincoln at the Mohawk Avenue School.  Grauerholz spoke with the driver, John Robayo and suspected he was drunk.  The 54 year-old Sparta resident was given a field sobriety test and then placed under arrest, according to police.

Robayo was brought to Sparta Police Department headquarters for breath testing and processing.  He was released several hours later to a sober adult.

Robayo was charged with driving while intoxicated, careless driving and failure to signal a turn.
