SPARTA, NJ – A Sparta man faces DWI charges after being stopped for erratic driving.  On July 28 Sparta Police Officer saw Paul Heckman driving a black Ford F-150 on Woodport Road crossing over the white fog line and braking for no apparent reason according to police.

Guido stopped the truck and spoke with the driver.  Guido described Heckman as having red and watery eyes and slurred speech.  Guido also smelled an alcoholic beverage in the truck according to police.

Sparta Sgt Hannam, Cpl. Morris and Police Officer May assisted at the scene.  Heckman was given field sobriety tests and taken to the Sparta Police Department headquarters for breath testing and processing, according to police.

Heckman was charged with DWI, failure to keep right, careless driving and was given a court date.  Heckman was released to a responsible adult.
