SPARTA, NJ – A Rumson woman faces DWI charges after tailgating a police car on February 13.  Sparta Police Officer Taylor May was on patrol on Route 15 around 10 a.m. when he saw a car following him too closely.

May checked and found the registration to be expired.  He stopped Maryellen Cushing, 50 and when speaking with her May suspected Cushing was intoxicated.

Cushing was given a series of field sobriety tests and then taken into custody. She was transported to Sparta Police Department headquarters for breath testing and processing.

Cushing was ticketed for DWI, careless driving, following too closely, expired registration, failure to produce registration, failure to produce insurance card. 

Cushing was also charged DWI with a minor in the vehicle.

She was released to a sober adult pending a court date.  Police Officer Arlene Lippencott also assisted with the investigation.
