SPARTA, NJ – Sparta Police have posted a warning about a suspicious incident that happened on February 3. A resident reported someone had come to his Sparta home and told his wife there was a water leak in the neighborhood.
According to the report, the person asked about the water in the home saying the leak had yet to be located.
The resident described the fake water department person as a tall white make with gray hair. He was wearing a shirt that said “Water Utilities.”
The Sparta Township Water Utility was contacted. They said they did not have any reports of a leak and that no township employees had been at the home in question.
Sparta police advise real Sparta Water Utility personnel would schedule an appointment through the municipal office before coming to your home. Additionally, Sparta staff would be wearing clearly marked Sparta Township uniforms, driving a Sparta Township vehicle and carrying township issued identification.
Sparta police urge residents to be vigilant and to contact them to report any suspicious activity to 973-729-6121.
