Dear Editors,

As of today, America is both the wealthiest nation on earth and the one with the most deaths from Covid-19. I can’t help but think of the lives that would have been saved if America had different policies in place before this all began. For instance, without Medicare for All, many peoples’ underlying health problems go untreated for financial reasons, making them dramatically more susceptible to the disease. And without paid sick leave, we force workers to choose between spreading the disease, and keeping a roof over their families’ heads. This is a dangerous situation. We know for a fact that in the early days of the pandemic, before widespread lockdowns, many people went to work sick – not because they wanted to, but because of the very real risk that they would lose their jobs if they stayed home.

Dr. Arati Kreibich, who’s running in the 5th district’s Congressional primary on July 7, supports both Medicare for All and mandatory paid sick leave. At a time when so many people are suffering, it’s absolutely essential that we elect people like her with the compassion and foresight to fight for these policies. The fact that America hasn’t implemented either of these, like every developed country did years ago, is both inhumane and foolish. Thousands of people who’ve died horrifying deaths would still be alive today. Let's elect candidates who support these policies to Congress before the next pandemic hits, not after.
