Susan G. Komen North Jersey to Present Free Women’s Wellness Expo in Wayne, NJ in Partnership with Passaic County Department of Health & Board of Chosen Freeholders
All are welcome at this “women-focused” event with activities for the whole family!
The mission of October’s perennial National Breast Cancer Awareness Month has traditionally been focused on a singular core message: awareness. The impetus of the month-long campaign has been that women (and men) need to be aware of what’s normal for them, know their family histories, and pay heed to the importance of getting screened regularly for breast cancer. But last year, the local North Jersey Affiliate of Susan G. Komen decided to put a different spin on October; they decided to push the awareness envelope by launching a new Women’s Wellness Expo that provided access to free health screenings, informative speakers, and local resources.
This year, Komen North Jersey and the Passaic County Department of Health and Board of Chosen Freeholders are working together to present an expanded format that they anticipate will draw more than 1,000 attendees from Passaic County as well as the surrounding region. The event, presented as “a women-focused event with activities for the whole family,” will be held on Saturday, September 29th from 10:00am to 4:00pm at the Passaic County Technical Institute in Wayne, NJ.
“Our partnership with Komen North Jersey is focused on providing free access to health screenings and encouraging women and their families to embrace a healthy lifestyle,” says Charlene W. Gungil, Passaic County Health Officer. “We are particularly concerned about an increase in the incidence of breast cancer among younger residents of our county, and we’re working to change that trend. We know that there are many factors that can help lower the risk of breast cancer and other diseases. By partnering with like-minded organizations like Komen, we can provide better access to information and resources that can help detect these diseases early and refer to treatment, those who need it. It’s all about saving lives in our communities.”
Komen North Jersey also announced that they have New York radio host, publisher, motivational speaker and author Joan Herrmann (who is a Woodland Park, NJ resident) on board as the official Program Emcee and a special guest speaker. Joan created, hosts, and produces the radio show Change Your Attitude…Change Your Life (CYACYL) that airs on New York’s WOR 710 AM and streams on iHeartRadio. She also publishes 24/Seven, a monthly digital magazine that is distributed to hundreds of thousands worldwide. A published author and motivational speaker on the topics of transition, mind-body connection, and self-empowerment, Joan has been featured in Forbes, on the BBC, and other print and broadcast media. Her recent speaking engagements include the New Jersey Governor’s Conference for Woman, The New Jersey Association of Women Business Owners Keynote, and The Power of Positive Medicine with Dr. Bernie Siegel. She was also a voice for the American Lung Association’s Taking a Breath for Women campaign.
“Living a healthy lifestyle is important to breast health and early detection is essential to a positive outcome not only for breast cancer, but for so many other critical health issues, says Kelly E. Nagle, Komen North Jersey’s Executive Director. “The Women’s Wellness Expo in Passaic County will go beyond raising awareness to facilitate access to care for everyone in our communities—insured or uninsured, provide health education and advocate for women to take action with their health. We are grateful to the Passaic Department of Health and all of our many generous sponsors who are helping us to save lives here in New Jersey.”
