NEWTON, NJ—The Sussex Stags football team took the home opener as a win in the record books on Saturday, July 8, beating the Jersey Shore Hurricanes 38-13.
The Stags, a semi-pro football team, use Newton High School’s football field as their home turf. The team was established in 2014 by Steve Masotti Sr. and Gary Haase.
This year the team starts the season with a few changes. They are under the new leadership of Head Coach and former player, Mike “Chief” Keefer. Additionally, they have entered into a new league, becoming officially part of Major League Football.
Their home opener was also First Responders’ Night, in which the Stags were led on the field by the Franklin Fire Department Color Guard.
Defensively, Larry Ford led the Stags with 12 tackles and four sacks, while Jake Baker, Mike Montes and Jareem Miranda each had 10 tackles. Baker had 1.5 sacks, Montes had one sack, and Miranda had three sacks.
Femi Adebola and Johad Castro each had an interception. BJ Freeland had three tackles and three sacks in the game.
Offensively, Joe Enslin threw for 210 yards, scored one touchdown and had one interception, while Cody Lameroux had 16 carries for a total of 108 yards, along with three touchdowns.
Sparta High School alumni Lucas Faria rushed 27 yards, Enslin rushed five and Linwood Rideout rushed 11 yards throughout the game. Rideout, along with Mark Edwards each had one touchdown.
The Stags will continue the season as they take on the Trenton Capitals home on Saturday, July 15 for Small Business Night at the field. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for kids and children five and under are free.
