SPARTA, NJ - Several Boy Scouts from Troop 150 helped out at the Sparta Safety Village.  On June 22, 2017, scouts Adam B, Christian D, Robert H, Tyler H, Kaden K, Andreas O, Erich S, Thomas S and Scoutmaster, Joe Fucito, participated in the annual program by conducting four sessions on hiking preparedness and safety.

This was one of four activity areas that the incoming kindergarten children attending at the Safety Village event were able to experience.

The kids were shown various items and ask if they should be part of their hiking gear.  They were asked why or why not and then the kids placed the items in the appropriate container.

Scout Kaden K played the role of the unprepared hiker to show the kids how not to dress for the weather.

The scouts also discussed safe hiking practice ideas, including: don’t hike alone:

  • use the buddy system
  • for younger people, always hike with adults
  • bring and drink plenty of water

The kindergartners also learned what to do in case they were separated or otherwise lost while out walking or hiking – to stay calm and stay put – as the best way to be found.

The Sparta Safety Village is organized by the Junior Woman’s Club of Sparta.
