HELLERTOWN, PA - The Lost River Caverns and Cabela’s are a perfect mix of education and fun. The members of Venture Crew 276 set out on a Saturday morning and went deep into the cool cavern that was full of rocks and minerals of all sorts.
When the Crew arrived in the main room of the cavern, the tour guide shut off the lights to reveal the true beauty of the cavern walls. The caverns consist of a natural limestone and were formed by the dissolving of the limestone. Many, many years went by before the walls were formed. The crew members learned it had been mere water that shaped them
"When Venturing Crew 276 went to the Lost River Caverns, we learned a bunch and were amazed at the same time," said Crew member Alex Mottol.
Venture Crew members learned these particular caverns were first discovered in 1883.
After their cave experience the Crew went out Cabela’s outdoor sports store. At the store they met another tour guide who showed them around the large facility. The guide shared facts such as Cabela’s is the biggest store on the east coast at six acres.
It would not have been a crew expedition without a stop to eat, since the crew loves food. They stopped at a local Cracker Barrel and "ate yummy southern-style food." They played a few games of checkers while waiting.
Venturing is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 14 through 20 years of age. Venturing Crew 276 meets monthly in Byram Township at the Lakeland Emergency Squad building.
