SPARTA, NJ – This week the National Christian School Athletic Association announced its 2019-2020 awards. Veritas Christian Academy (VCA) girls’ basketball coach, Greg Gaffney has been selected as the 2019-20 NCSAA Girls' Varsity Basketball National Coach of the Year.
Gaffney has coached the Veritas girls' team for nine years, during which time he has a 237-50 coaching record. This season his team went 35-5, with a first-place finish in the Metro Christian Athletic Association and a first-place finish in the conference playoff tournament, followed by a fourth-place showing in the National Christian Scholastic Athletic Association Division 1 Basketball Championships. Additionally, the Veritas Christian Academy girls’ team was ranked #6 nationally by NCSAA and #1 in division 3 for schools their size.
Over Greg's coaching career (spanning twenty years), he has amassed 468 wins.
Beyond just the basketball court, Greg has impacted the lives of so many people at Veritas Christian Academy, Kaitlyn Gaffney, VCA Athletic Director and Greg's daughter, had this to say, "He has completely revolutionized the girls basketball program at Veritas, shaping the program into a top tier competitor year in and year out, in our league and without. This season, his team played the toughest schedule in VCA history, and yet, they pulled off an outstanding record once again with a school high of 35 wins, took first in our MCAA League and Tournament, first in the Mid-East Regional Christian School Tournament in Maryland, and saw their first national appearance - his team placing fourth in the Division I tournament and ranking 1st in NCSAA Division III. Beyond the numbers and the winning, Greg has shown an absolute dedication to teaching his players to put Christ-first. In all of his coaching, his focus is always on discipling, in shaping his players into becoming Christ-like leaders, and it was truly evident in the way his girls acted this season amidst the winning."
Departing senior, Chloe Milanesi, has nothing but praise and honor for her high school coach. "Coach Gaffney is an incredibly talented coach, and it has been an awesome experience to get to play for him” said Milanesi. “He knows so much about the game of basketball; it is truly inspiring. What’s really special is that he centers the VCA Lady Lions basketball team around reaching for a “level of excellence” not just in the game of basketball, but also in our day-to-day lives while living them for God. It’s the TRP (Total Release Performance - giving all we have for the glory of the Lord) mentality that he stresses to all of his players that not only impacts how we play the game, but also WHO we are on and off the court. His influential way of coaching has impacted me so deeply, and it will continue to be impactful to others in years to come. Thank you, Coach Gaffney!!”
Fellow senior, Amy Van Grouw, sees Coach Gaffney as not just a coach, but a trainer beyond basketball. "As a basketball coach, Coach Gaffney has always worked to pull out the best in each and every one of us. He is a constant encourager” shared Van Grouw. “Coach Gaffney has worked so hard pushing the entire team and impressing a spirit of TRP into every athlete. Coach Gaffney has been more than just a great basketball coach, however. He sees the importance of training us in more than just basketball skills, but also in exemplifying a Biblical mindset while playing the sport. Coach Gaffney has shaped all of us into not only better athletes, but also into better examples of Christ."
In addition to Coach Gaffney’s honor, several VCA basketball players also received NCSAA honors including:
Chloe Milanesi - All-American Third Team and Northeast Super-Regional Team
Charlotte Milanesi - Northeast Super-Regional Team
Ethan Mulder - All-American Third Team and Northeast Super-Regional Team
Dylan Cuperus - Northeast Super-Regional Team
