NEWTON, NJ—Despite the snowflakes throughout the morning set up of the parade, the sun finally came out just in time to start the parade. Residents from Newton, Sparta, Andover, Green, and all over Sussex County gathered on Spring Street, dressed in green for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

This year was Sussex County’s 16th annual St. Patrick’s Day parade and had over 1,050 people marching, 96 vehicles, 11 floats and about 33 animals.

This years’ 2019 Grand Marshalls were the Vietnam Veterans from the Vietnam Veterans of America, Wallkill Valley, Vernon Chapter 1002, led by their president, John Harrigan, of which there are 250 members.

The chapter was charted in 2009 and has marched in various parades, salutes to veterans, Sussex County Fair, Wreaths Across America, they attend to veterans at the Lyons VA Hospital they are the founders of the Northern NJ Veterans Memorial Cemetery and continuously assist all veterans to get benefits they are entitled to. In addition the chapter has awarded over $30,000 in Scholarship Grants to Sussex County H/S/ students.
