The COVID-19 shutdown has impacts in ways many would not consider.  The Sussex County Clerk announced ballot position for the June 2, 2020 primary election will be conducted in the clerk’s office and streamed on YouTube Live beginning at 3 p.m. on April 9.

Sussex County Freeholder Director also released a statement expressing disappointment in the disbursement of the first round of stimulus funding.  Friday, small businesses had the opportunity to apply for the Payroll Protection Program.  Sussex County businesses “encountered nothing but chaos,” she said.

According to Petillo it appears only Small Business Administration or SBA approved banks are qualified lenders for this PPP. “Unfortunately, many banks in Sussex County are not SBA approved,” she said.  Compounding the problem, banks that are SBA approved are giving priority to their customers for the first come, first served basket of funds, according to Petillo.

Sussex County and three other New Jersey counties were excluded from receiving funding from CARES Act through the Community Development Block Grants or CDBG or Emergency Solution Grants or ESG.  This county did not meet population requirements of having 500,000 residents, a city of more than 50,000 residents or a “Principal City” as designated by the census.

Senator Steve Oroho petitioned Governor Murphy to distribute CARES Act discretionary funding to the unfunded counties. Congressman Josh Gottheimer similarly petitioned Speaker Nancy Pelosi to adjust formula used in the next round federal funding to get to Sussex County businesses and residents.

Petillo asked “How many other roadblocks will be placed in our way preventing rural communities like Sussex County from receiving their fair allocation of the Coronavirus Stimulus Bill?”
