SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ – The Sussex County Department of Health reminded residents, all state and county parks are closed.  While they encourage people get out and walk, hike and bike, but do so in their own towns, in their own neighborhoods. 

Municipalities have jurisdictions over the parks withing their communities.  In Newton The parks and playgrounds are closed.  In Sparta the township and school district fields and facilities are closed.

The County Director of Health, James McDonald announced five additional COVID-19 related deaths as of April 7, bringing the county total to 16.

The most recent coronavirus victims are:

  • 68-year-old female from Hampton Township,
  • 90-year-old female from Newton Town,
  • 94-year-old female from Newton Town,
  • 78-year-old male from Andover Township,

According to officials the current test results may be from tests taken anywhere from 10 to 14 days ago and do not likely represent any effect from the Executive Orders 107 and 108 requiring shut down of non-essential business and travel.  

The New Jersey COVID-19 dashboard reports as of April 7, there have been 44,416 positive tests, 50,558 negative tests and 1,232 deaths, related to coronavirus. Bergen County continues to have the most patients with 7,533 and 263 deaths, Essex County has 5,078 patients with 232 deaths

According to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus resource center, The United States currently has 398,185 confirmed cases with 21,849 recovered patients and 12,844 coronavirus deaths.  New York City has reported 4,009 COVID-19 related deaths.

The state COVID-19 hotline can be reached by dialing 2-1-1 or 1-800-962-1253 or text NJCOVID to 898-211.

Testing for coronavirus is still not available in Sussex County.  Anyone who is concerned they may have symptoms of COVID-19 are asked to contact their doctor.
