NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School announced the winners of the Enthusiastic readers award for the 2019-2020 school year.

Normally the Board of Education holds a meeting and recognizes all Enthusiastic readers for all three schools.

Three students were chosen as Enthusiastic Readers for the high school.  According to Erin Marmara, the Library Media Specialist at the high school, they earned the designation "largely due to their participation in the Newton High School Book Club."

Marmara also noted that unlike the elementary and middle schools, the high school does not have an overabundance of nominations coming in for readers.

“We have found that with high school students the demand of classwork, jobs, sports and extracurriculars is much more time-consuming. Sadly the numbers of students who are dedicated to reading for pleasure regularly during the school year is smaller, which makes it even more remarkable for those students who do demonstrate a passion for reading,” Marmara said.

Pictures of the winners were unable to be taken before the school was closed and moved to remote learning due to the pandemic.
