NEWTON, NJ- Newton public schools will be closed from Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 27 according to Newton Superintendent Kennedy Greene. Greene said the decision was made after a conference call with officials from the Sussex County Department of Education, the Sussex County Department of Health, the New Jersey Department of Education and the Sussex County superintendents.

All large group events and field trips are postponed from Monday, March 16 through Sunday, April 19. All athletic events are canceled through Sunday, April 12. Many of the games will be rescheduled, according to the district announcement. 

SAT’s scheduled for Saturday, March 14 will be proctored as planned.

Newton staff will be available in each school on Monday, March 16 between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. They will be continuing to prepare take home lessons.  Teachers will be available to talk with parents and administrators will be in the building.

Preschool staff will be located at the Merriam Avenue School.

Plans for resources, learning materials, medications and meals to be picked up will be announced.

The food service company will have packaged meals available for families who receive free and reduced meal plans.  If parents are not able to pick up the meals, arrangements will be made for them to be delivered to the home.

The district will continue to use the enhances cleaning protocols in the schools and on the buses throughout the closure.
