SUSSEX COUNTY, NJ – Sussex County middle school children can show their support for military veterans through the annual essay contest. The Sussex County Board of Chosen Freeholders have announced the patriotic essay contest for students grades six, seven and eight.
The theme for the contest is “Why are we saluting Sussex County Military Veterans?” The essay must be no more than 200 words, written voluntarily. Each middle school is invited to submit one essay from a girl and one from a boy.
Members of the Veteran’s Committee will judge the essays. The committee is comprised of representatives from Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. They will judge the essays without knowing any identifying information about the author.
One girl and one boy will read their winning at the November 3 Salute to Military Veterans parade and event at the Sussex County Fair Ground. The winners will also receive $200.
The event honors the sacrifices and contributions of military veterans, according to the freeholder’s announcement. Essays can be submitted by the schools to Sussex Division of Senior Services, One Spring Street, Newton, 07860 by October 4, 2019. Submissions should include the school’s name, the grade, name, address and phone number of the author as well as a contact person from the school.
