SPARTA, NJ-Members of the Sparta Woman’s Club took part in the national initiative Wreaths Across America.  Joining with citizens across the country on December 19 the Sparta women joined with members of the McAfee Fire Department and the cemetery sponsors Vietnam Veterans of America Wallkill Valley Chapter #1002, laying wreaths at the Northern New Jersey Veterans Memorial Cemetery, according to Co-President Kathy Shepard.

“Every year wreats are laid on the graves of our veterans as a commemoration in their honor,” Shepard said. “This ceremony is conducted throughout the United States at precisely the same time, including Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.”

The Sparta Women’s Club Co-President said a wreath was ceremonially dedicated for each branch of the military “in gratitude to our valiant and noble veterans.”

The Sparta Women’s Club sponsored 34 wreaths with the names of veterans being memorialized, Shepard said.  Shepard, together with Co-President Marianne Bayliss and Chairperson Janet Knecht attended the event.

Brigadier General Vincent F. Malone II was joined by representatives from each of the military branches, giving remarks on the day.  Individual veterans buried at the cemetery were honored by family members who also laid wreaths and announced their name, Shepard said.

In addition to the wreaths, the Sparta Women’s Club contributed to Pets for Vets, a program to support surviving veterans, Shepard said.
