NEWTON, NJ- The Town of Newton is asking residence for assistance in keeping the sewers from getting blocked.  According to the announcement, the Water and Sewer Department are “pleading with residents not to flush wipes – bleach wipes, baby wipes, sanitizer wipes, dust wipes even ‘flushable’ wipes, but put them in the trash instead.”

The announcement said, unlike toilet paper, those wipes do not break down in wastewater.  Instead they will accumulate, mix with grease, clog the pipes and lead to sewage overflows.

This will also lead to a breakdown of the pump stations, not allowing them to work properly, causing a malfunction of the town’s wastewater treatment plant.
